This was one of the things that I could never miss – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in the Waldorf Hilton? I was there. I was there so much.
The event itself was all kinds of brilliant. Chimamanda spoke so eloquently about her writing, Americanah, and life in Nigeria. What I positively loved was the fact that the interviewer was a fan – a member of the Stylist team and her questions were the questions I would ask. They were the questions all fans would ask. Together they spoke about hair and race and feminism.
It was when the audience started to ask questions that I realised just how loved Chimamanda is. She has changed and touched so many people with her words – me included. I also loved the questions which were asked. One of my favourites was on Beyone and the fact that the singer used part of Chimamanda’s speech in a song which has the line ‘bow down bitches’. What did she feel about that?
Her answer was all kinds of brilliant – Beyonce made feminism just that little bit more accessible to women and girls of all ages. Can that ever be a bad thing?
We also found out that the incredible Lupita Nyong’o has optioned Americanah, meaning she now owns the film rights and of she does make the movie, she plans to star in it.
I am really looking forward to that almost as much as I am looking forward to the next Stylist Bookclub. I was told who the author was and it’s another brilliant writer! Roll on August and Sarah Walters!
And if you haven’t read Americanah then you need to. Right now.
