Edinburgh – A Bookbinding Class at the Owl & Lion

This was the one thing we booked before heading up to Scotland – a book binding class. After all it’s not always you are able to bind your own book. The class was taking place at the Owl & London, a shop selling handmade journals. So on Monday evening we made our way to the shop ready to bind some books.

I didn’t know what I had expected in this class but I didn’t think we would be making our own leather bound journal, which is precisely what we did and it was so much fun. We were taught how to do a Venetian style of binding requiring a chain stitch to bind the leather and paper together. We were then taught how to create a binding to tie around the journal to keep it closed.

What made me actually giddy with joy was the fact that no glue was used. Just a needle and linen thread.

Isn’t it beautiful? I never thought I would be able to make something this beautiful or creative in my adult life. Very nice to prove myself wrong and I want to do something like this again.

What a beautiful and creative craftsmanship! Love that you put the process pictures! You should do other types from now on 🙂

I really, really want to. And if you ever get the chance to bind a book like this then you have to – it is so much fun
