Mildred’s is one of my favourite restaurants in London. It’s small, airy, doesn’t take reservations, and for them vegetarian food is the normal and their ‘specials’ include vegan and gluten free dishes. When I pick up one of their menus I can eat anything I want. Pretty sure that has never happened before in any other restaurant ever. Earlier today Doctor Sister, Maman and I paid their hallowed vegetarian halls a visit.
As we had the luxury of choosing anything we wanted the three of us all decided to go for something different (again something which has rarely happened. Usually all three of us are eating the same thing). I went for a harissa burger, sister for stir-fry Asian vegetables and Mutti went for Mildred’s fresh tortelloni.
The food was delicious as usual but it was Madre’s fresh tortelloni which wins all the awards. The sauce – white wine cream sauce with truffle oil – complemented the pumpkin and ricotta filling and chestnut mushrooms perfectly. It was heaven on a plate. When I was finishing my sweet potato chips (another favourite) I used Mum’s extra sauce as a far more delicious ketchup than ketchup can ever be.
As for dessert? Pecan pie which we took home and made Pater try – as he is a vegan he hasn’t had ice cream in ages and he loved it.
And brilliantly, they are releasing a cook book coming out in the summer of 2015! They definitely have one guaranteed sale. Maybe two – one to use and one to look at.
