NTC is back! This season the focus is on training efficiently and using the time you have to train as effectively as possible. And what’s more, this Nike have used some of the best instructors and best studios to host the sessions. In a week classes cover Mobility, Endurance, and Strength in locations including Kobox, Frame, and Third Space.
As with almost every class Nike offers, these are free and work on a first come first served basis. Last week I was lucky enough to head to the fist Strength class at Kobox.
The trainer was Toby Huntington-Whitely and his class was all about perfecting technique and building muscle with heavy weights and a slow, steady tempo. The class began with a warm up and loosening of muscles. I have used a foam roller for a long time but it is always brilliant using one under the direction of someone who knows what they are teaching. Mt quads and shoulder muscles got a wonderful stretch and roll before we even began the class.
Once that was completed we started circuit training. The group of us were spilt into twos or threes and each of us had to complete the whole circuit three times. Each time the circuit became a little more challenging.
When we first started I have to admit I was sceptical. I see effective HIIT workouts as being quick and fast, full of reps and leaving me drenched in sweat at the end. In my head I couldn’t understand how slow and steady equalled results and sweat.
I think I had forgotten the parable of the hare and tortoise.
By the end of the third circuit I was exhausted. We used kettle bells, dumbbells and body weight exercises to tone and strengthen our body. Yes, not as much sweat as with a faster workout but my muscles were hurting in a way they hadn’t for a long time and the next day was a sore one for me, especially my glutes and thighs.
I loved the workout and will hopefully be quick enough when registration opens to attend another session!
