Nike x Barry’s West

Barry’s West has arrived! After four years in London, the studio has finally opened their third studio in Queensway and last week I had the chance to try an exclusive Nike x Barry’s West class led by Mr PMA himself, Faisal.

For the uninitiated of you (like I was about a week ago) PMA = Positive Mental Attitude and as far as I am concerned this is as important as physical health. I have been lucky enough to train with Faisal before – he’s always encouraging, motivating, and has the best tunes! (Seriously, I was singing along for the whole class)

I was really looking forward to this class – the last time I trained at Barry’s it was Hell Week and since then hadn’t had the chance to go. (I still want to do Hell Week Round 2). With work and moving a little out of central London getting to classes in time is now a little more of a struggle. This one started at 7.10am and thanks to an early alarm and a lift from my mum to a working tube station I made it in time!

Barry’s West is so close to Queensway studio – they say it’s a two minute walk but it felt a lot shorter than that. Before the class started I had the chance to explore the new premises a little more and wow, wow, WOW. It’s all so beautiful. Hello Malin + Goetz toiletries, Dyson hair dryers, GHD hair straighteners.

But you know what impresses me more than this? The space and how clean it was. I am tired of sweating after having a shower because I’m so stressed out with how close everyone is to me. I don’t want to touch a random stranger and I don’t want them to touch me.  At Barry’s West this thankfully won’t be a problem.

Once I’d dropped everything off (and if you go, your four digit code into the lockers first before locking it) I made my way back upstairs and into the studio. I think my mouth actually dropped open. It has to be the largest space I have ever trained in. There is enough room for so many people to work out! The setup is the same as with Barry’s Central and East: treadmills on one side and benches on the other. Weights of varying heaviness are along the far wall.

I’d heard a lot about these treadmills but in my mind wasn’t really sure how they could compete with what Barry’s already have. Those treadmills are goooood. Then I got on these brand spanking new Woodways. Have you ever wanted a treadmill with instant speed and incline controls? Well these have that and a dynamic mode button!

The class itself was split into four sections. Two of them were on the floor and two of them were on the treadmills. The treadmill sprints and HIIT workout always happens using three different speeds – beginner, intermediate, and advanced. It was during this class that, for the first time ever, I was able to keep with the beginners speeds Faisal was calling out. Until then I had always floundered and failed. BUT NOT THIS TIME!!

I can’t tell you how amazing I felt – amazing studio and location, and my body and mind actually feeling strong enough to carry on. Once I had showered I actually think I should have pushed myself a little more….that just means I have to book myself into another class soon.

Barry’s West also offers a fabulous Fuel Bar and I tried one of their signature post-workout shakes, flavoured like a snickers bar. I’m drooling just thinking about it.

For me Barry’s is and always will be the best workouts I have ever done. I don’t need or want anything more than someone playing amazing music and telling me what to do with a positive mental attitude. And with Faisal at Barry’s West I got that and more!
