A little over six months ago my cousin told me that she and her husband had signed up for something called Wimp 2 Warrior. I’d never heard of this and promptly went to do some research. This was my cool cousin, the one who always had the most amazing hair and the best clothes. She was also the one who practiced Kung Fu and went to China multiple times to train and fight. She’d also had a baby three months before.

So I was in under no doubt that this was something equally impressive and cool.

When Virgin Active UK invited me to a HIIT session with them and musician and YouTuber Hobbie Stuart one evening last week I was very happy to go along after work. I have fallen in love with HIIT (High Intensity Interval training) just as I have fallen in love with running and yoga.

So I am relatively new to the world of weight lifting and strength training. I wish I could tell you all that I can bench press my own body weight and do 30 chin ups in a row – I can’t…yet, but I have fallen in love with lifting weights and building muscles. There are so many benefits to strength training and I was to talk about them and be very frank with the changes that have happened to my body.

I am not the kind of woman who has fourteen different trainers each for a different activity. Yes I have trainers for fashion and trainers for sport but my trainers for sport and fitness numbered the grand total of one and I used them for running and training and everything in between. They are adidas Supernova Boost and I love them and they suited all my fitness needs perfectly. And then I started hearing people – fellow runners and complete strangers talk about Nike Free Transfrom Flyknits. Everyone seemed to love these training shoes. I kept hearing the words ‘comfortable’ and ‘light’ being bandied about so I did something that went completely against my normal behaviour and bought a pair.

Barry’s Bootcamp is a London fitness boutique where each hour long class is made up of half floor exercises (weight and strength training) and half treadmill exercises. You also have the option of opting out of the treadmill section and doing a Double Floor (DF) workout where you only concentrate on the floor exercises for the whole hour. On every month where there are five Monday’s they do something called Hell Week where the challenge is to do 7 workouts in 7 days. It’d been on my radar for a while now just because I’d seen so many people doing it on social media and when it turned out May was one of those months I decided to bite the bullet and sign up….
